The medal was instituted in 1908 following the creation of the Territorial Force to be awarded for 12 years? continuous efficient service (wartime service counting double). The first version bore the head of King Edward VII and this was replaced by that of King George V in 1910. The medal was superseded in 1921 by the Territorial Efficiency Medal.
